Benefits of completing a residency

Pharmacy residencies are designed to further prepare pharmacists for advanced professional practice. Not only does residency completion offer residents a competitive advantage in the marketplace, but residency programs train residents in a variety of patient care settings and provide opportunities to interact and network with many different types of health care practitioners. They give students exposure to innovative practice styles and settings.

Besides gaining experience in direct patient care, education and leadership, residents also develop an understanding of how the healthcare system works. Employers desire, or in some cases, require residency-trained clinical pharmacists for entry-level positions. By the year 2020, all entry-level positions with direct patient care responsibilities may require residency training (Crouch, pg. 13, 2013).
